Solar eclipse 2026

On August 12th, 2026, we will be able to witness a total solar eclipse, one of the most spectacular astronomical and natural phenomena that exist.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon aligns perfectly between the Sun and the Earth and completely covers the solar disk, casting its shadow over a narrow band of our planet. During these unique moments, daylight fades as if it were dusk, and the solar corona, normally invisible, can be seen.

The path of totality on August 12th will cross the Arctic Ocean, pass over northeastern Greenland and western Iceland, and then enter the Iberian Peninsula, crossing it from west to east and passing through numerous provincial capitals from A Coruña to Palma, including León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, and Valencia.

To observe it under the best conditions, it is advisable to choose a place with good visibility toward the west and free of obstacles such as tall buildings or mountains, since the Sun will be very low on the horizon.

Despite the beauty of the phenomenon, observing a solar eclipse requires maximum caution, as sunlight, even when only partially visible—can cause irreversible damage to the retina.

For this reason, it is essential to use certified eclipse glasses that comply with the ISO 12312‑2 standard, the only one that guarantees safe eye protection. Conventional sunglasses or improvised filters (such as CDs, photographic negatives, or smoked glass) are not suitable and can be dangerous.
