Do you want to learn to recognize which butterflies visit your garden or live near your home?

Would you like to be able to identify the butterflies you see on your hikes or when visiting protected natural areas?

Now is the time to start observing butterflies.

Attention! It is very important that you keep in mind that when observing these insects you should try not to harm them. As always, you will ensure that observation alters the environment in which they live as little as possible, since they are a key part of maintaining the natural balance. For this reason, in this document of initiation to observation we will leave aside those articles (which we also have in Oryx) for their preparation and conservation.

To learn more, you can watch this video where, in addition to learning to observe butterflies and use the butterfly net, you will get to know one of the most successful citizen science projects in Catalonia. Watch the video here.

Field guides to identify butterflies

This is the first essential element to learn to identify butterflies. If you start, we recommend the Field Mini Guide that we present the first place: clear, concise and with a selection of the species that you will see on your first outings and also some that must be known for their beauty, spectacularity. Although the texts are in Catalan, for each species there is written Spanish and English names. The other are practical publications to go out into the field and some that will help to expand your knowledge.

The butterfly net

To go out to the field the basic equipment is the butterfly net. It should be of a fairly large size and quality to allow the butterfly to be observed and then allowed to fly freely again. The net should be as thin as possible to avoid damaging the microscopic scales on the wings and that the friction does not break their legs and antennae. The size of the ring should be wide, so that it provides a greater area of success in making the capture.

In Oryx all butterfly nets allow to combine a folding ring, a net and a handle. There are many options especially in the functionality of the handle, since there are those that can be folded and others that reach great lengths.

We propose here the complete butterfly net set, as it is the most used and most economical. We also list some basic elements to build a smaller butterfly net with folding handle. Searching within our web you can choose the ring, the net and the handle that suits you best.

Observation with binoculars and monoculars

We can also consider accessories to observe butterflies from a distance. In many cases they will save us having to capture them with the butterfly net. We can use any binocular but the shorter the minimum focus will be better. As always, you have to think that when they are smaller, binoculars have less luminosity and are less comfortable when using them for a long time.

We can also use monoculars, specifically this one that we suggest can also be used as a field magnifier when adding the accessory with lighting.
